N's Birthday
The Birthday celebration is very special in my class and I usually make a child's timeline with their photos from their birth till present...and as we have our circle time, we talk about it.
In a Montessori classroom the birthday child holds the earth or a globe and walks around the sun or a candle while we sing a the song "The earth goes round the sun".
(Sung to tune of "The Farmer in the Dell")
The earth goes round the sun
The earth goes round the sun
The earth goes round the sun, 1 time and now ______ is (age)....
We continue the song until we have gone through each year until the year they are now.
The walk represents the earth revolving around the sun. The child walks around as many years old he or she is and stops on the month and date he or she was born.
The birthday celebration is a fun way to introduce the concepts of months, days of the month, the earth, the sun, and how the earth revolves around the sun.
